Self-Determination is a theory of motivation which focuses on individuals having control over their lives and exercising the basic rights of citizenship, freedom, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
A Self-Determined life encourages choice, risk, and responsibility, and is associated with greater independence and improved quality of life. Self-Directed Supports (SDS) is one option available to support Self-Determination, allowing for an individual to be more involved in directing his/her own services.
- You decide who you want to provide your services and supports.
- You control how your budget is used for services.
- You are the boss of your caregivers and services; you hire, train, supervise, and fire
your direct care workers.
Meet Robert*, a proud man, who at 65 years old was living in the home he has owned for many years, which he helped build in a very quiet country area. Due to his excessive drinking habits, he fell from his wheelchair during a self-transfer causing him to break his hip and enter into a nursing home to heal.
After his long stay in the nursing home Robert was ready to leave, however, now he needed supports in place as he was no longer able to do self-transfers. Due to worker shortages in his area and with no alternative supports available, Robert moved into a residential facility located right in town. Unfortunately, he was extremely unhappy in the residential facility as Robert is a very private person and had difficulties adjusting from his quiet country living to the more urban community while living with other household members. Robert wanted more.
Through Self-Determination Robert changed his drinking habits. With the support of his team, he found two SDS workers who divided the time for Robert’s supports. Finally, Robert returned home in March of 2016. He is so happy to be back home, which would not have been possible without Self-Directed Supports. He wanted more, and he got it.
